Topic 1: Top healthy tips for teenagers

Because the teenage years are such an important time for growth and development, a healthy and varied diet is essential to provide teenagers with all the energy and nutrients they need to concentrate well in school and participate in sports and activities.

Making healthy choices about what we eat and drink, how active we are and how much sleep we get is a great start.

If you spend most of the day at home, it can sometimes be difficult to enjoy healthy food and drink. By becoming a “health champion” you can help yourself, your family members and your friends become healthier by eating healthier foods and drinks and becoming more active. Use this checklist to incorporate healthy habits into your day:

  • Pack a healthy lunch and snacks each night for the next day. Eat the lunch you packed. Try to avoid sodas, chips, and chocolate or crisps from vending machines.
  • Go to bed at a regular time every night to recharge your body and mind. Turn off your phone, TV, and other devices when you go to bed. Try to get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep each night.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast.
  • Walk or cycle to school if you live nearby and can do so safely. Invite friends to join you.
  • Get up and walk around during class, even if your next class is in the same room.
  • Participate in gym class instead of sitting on the sidelines.
  • Participate in the choice of food and drink at home. Help prepare dinner and share it with your family for dinner.

Being healthy sounds like it could be a lot of work. It is important to adjust your healthy eating and physical activity plans to meet your personal goals.
